Introduction
Before the season begins, a doorway into the things we carry quietly—and the ways we learn to make their weight look ordinary.
From the introduction
There is a particular way of opening a door when your hands are full.
You lean into it. Use a shoulder. Shift what you are carrying just enough to get through.
I have spent most of my life standing at that door.
And somewhere along the way, I got very good at looking like somebody who wasn't carrying anything.

An introduction.
You have both arms loaded with bags from the car.
You even found a room underneath your chin for one more.
And as you walk towards your front door,
You realize your keys are in your pocket.
So you stand there for a few seconds trying to figure out what makes the most sense.
You can set everything down.
It would take four seconds.
But you carried it this far,
And putting them down feels too much like starting all over.
So you do what you do best.
You ease your two fingers into your pocket and feel around while the weight of the bag is pulled against your hands until you find the key ring.
And you make it work.
Because you always make it work.
I've spent most of my life standing at that door,
Not with bags,
With hopes,
Dreams,
Wants,
Fears.
And I got very good at looking like somebody who wasn't carrying anything at all.
Here's how these work.
I'll talk for a few minutes,
Usually about something that's happened to me,
Because that's the only thing that I really can speak on honestly.
And maybe you've experienced it too.
Then it'll get quiet.
I'll ask you to close your eyes.
And we will sit for a while with some things that I've been noticing.
I'll be right there with you.
I'll put them out whenever I'm finished.
